We caught the 6 am train back to Salzburg. With only a few hours of sleep, I immediately tried to fall asleep on the 4-hour train ride to Munich. Sleeping on trains is easier than sleeping in cars but still tricky. You can't put your feet on the seats without risking verbal reprimanding or potential fines. I've found putting my backpack on the aisle seat, laying my jackets on top to add some cushion, sitting in the window seat, and rolling into the fetal position with my feet propped up on the wall is the comfiest position possible. If you can fall asleep while sitting up - good for you - just bring a neck pillow and you're good to go. If you're a light sleeper like me I'd recommend a sleep mask or earbuds to drown out the chatter of other passengers.
